The golden jackal (lat. Canis aureus) is our autochthonous game from the dog family, which has had different tendencies and dynamics of population growth throughout the past. In the middle of the 20th century, it was almost exterminated from this area by various methods of hunting and poisoning to reduce the number of predators. In the second half of the 20th century there is a sudden growth and expansion of both our two populations of jackals and jackals and from neighboring countries due to their easy adaptability and large amount of food. In just a few decades, the golden jackal has come from the brink of extinction to unprecedented abundance in different habitat types and on different continents. In the past few years, the golden jackal reached habitats where it had never been before, stayed there and spread further. This growth in numbers brought him into various conflicts with humans, because with the growth in the number of terns, the interaction between people and terns increased. We can control this increase in numbers by hunting and thus reduce the number of the golden jackal population. Conflicts with humans are mostly based on the fact that the jackals attacks livestock and domestic poultry and causes economic damage. The public's views in the Republic of Croatia are diverse on the issue of the golden jackal, but the knowledge of the existence of the jackal in our forests does not cause fear in people, but the possibility of the appearance of some zoonosis does. Further time will show us how far golden jackal will cover his range and when his population will stopped grow.
