In this paper it is made an overview of the security measures against of tunnel fires, major accidents which occurred in recent years, European projects aimed at increasing the level of fire safety in tunnels, and are compared the requirements of internationally recognized and some major national standards and recommendations on tunnel safety. Analyzed are the possible dangerous events in road tunnels and different scenarios of events, and special attention was paid to the interaction between these events and the traditional methods of response to them, with an emphasis on research fire events. It has been proven that the traditional approach, without the use of a stationary system for extinguishing / suppression / control system, generally impossible to prevent the development of fire toward the disastrous scenario if there are appropriate conditions for such development. It is also proven that the Fire Department that are responsible for firefighting certain tunnels regularly have available insufficient amount of water and they are concentrated on successful response to increasing of fire upon arrival at the fire site. In the outline it was shown the proposed system with stationary foam fire extinguishing / suppression / control in the tunnel. Such a standard procedure would represent a tool with whose help could help clear experimentally determined and compared with each other possibilities water spray systems, foam and water mist in representative fire scenarios. In this sense, it is proposed to the European level to encourage the further development of research, especially experimental, leading to the development of optimal safety and economically acceptable solutions to prevent or mitigate the greatest number of potentially catastrophic accidents.
